Tewahedo Christology: The One Nature of Christ
Introduction: The Mystery of Christ’s Nature
One of the deepest mysteries in Christianity is how Christ is both God and man. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church teaches that Jesus Christ has one united nature—a perfect combination of divinity and humanity. This belief is called Tewahedo, which means “to be made one” in Ge’ez.
But what does Tewahedo really mean? How is it different from other Christian teachings? And why is it so important for our salvation? In this post, we will explore:
✅ The meaning of Tewahedo Christology
✅ Its biblical foundation
✅ How it shapes Ethiopian Orthodox faith and worship
1. Understanding Tewahedo: The One United Nature of Christ
🔹 What Does "Tewahedo" Mean?
The word Tewahedo (ተዋሕዶ) comes from the ancient Ge'ez language and means “being made one”. It teaches that Christ is fully God and fully man, perfectly united in one divine-human nature.
This belief follows the teachings of St. Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444), one of the greatest defenders of Orthodox Christology. He taught:
📜 “One Incarnate Nature of God the Word” (μία φύσις τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου σεσαρκωμένη).
This means that after the Incarnation, Christ became one person with one united nature—He is not divided into two separate natures.
🔹 How Tewahedo Differs from Other Christological Positions

📌 Key Point: Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity does not teach that Christ is only divine or that His humanity was lost. Instead, His divinity and humanity are perfectly united in one nature, beyond human understanding.
2. The Biblical Foundation for Tewahedo Christology
The Ethiopian Orthodox belief in one united nature is deeply rooted in the Bible.
🔹 Christ is Fully God and Fully Man in One Person
📖 John 1:14 – “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
- This verse shows that God truly became human and did not just "appear" to be human.
📖 Colossians 2:9 – “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
- This confirms that Christ is fully God and fully human in one nature.
📖 Isaiah 9:6 – “For unto us a Child is born... and His name will be called Mighty God.”
- This prophecy proves that the Messiah is both God and man.
📖 Hebrews 2:14 – “Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity.”
- Christ took on real human flesh, not just an illusion of humanity.
🔹 Christ’s Actions Show His Divine-Human Unity
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus does things that show both His divinity and humanity at the same time:
- He sleeps in the boat (human), but calms the storm (divine). (Mark 4:38-39)
- He weeps for Lazarus (human), but raises him from the dead (divine). (John 11:35, 43-44)
- He suffers on the cross (human), but forgives sins (divine). (Luke 23:34)
📖 Jesus said: “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)
3. How Tewahedo Christology Shapes Ethiopian Orthodox Worship and Spirituality
The belief in Christ’s one united nature influences everything in Ethiopian Orthodox faith.
🔹 The Eucharist (Holy Qurbana) and the Real Presence of Christ
Ethiopian Orthodox Christians believe that in the Holy Qurbana (Divine Liturgy), Christ’s body and blood are truly present.
📖 John 6:56 – “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.”
- Because Christ is one person, when we receive the Eucharist, we receive both His divinity and humanity.
🎶 Ethiopian Orthodox Eucharistic Hymn:
"He who is above came down for our sake, remaining above and below, He was made man and yet remained God."
🔹 Icons and Sacred Art Reflect Christ’s Divine-Human Unity
- Christ’s face is symmetrical in Ethiopian Orthodox icons, showing He is one undivided being.
- He is often depicted with a cross in His halo, reminding us of His sacrifice as both God and man.
- The Gospel Book in His hand symbolizes that He is the living Word of God.
🔹 The Role of Fasting and Asceticism
Tewahedo Christology also shapes Ethiopian Orthodox spiritual life:
✅ We fast to imitate Christ’s humanity, who fasted for 40 days.
✅ We pray and worship to unite ourselves with Christ’s divinity.
✅ We practice humility because Christ, though fully God, humbled Himself to become man (Philippians 2:6-8).
4. Why Tewahedo Christology Matters
The belief in one united nature of Christ is not just an abstract doctrine—it is the foundation of our salvation.
✅ It protects the truth of who Christ is—fully God and fully man in one person.
✅ It ensures that the Incarnation and Crucifixion were real acts of salvation.
✅ It shapes how we worship, pray, and live as Orthodox Christians.
📜 St. Cyril of Alexandria said:
"It was not a mere man who died for us, but the Lord of Glory in the flesh."
🎶 Final Thought:
📖 Ethiopian Orthodox Hymn: "Christ is one. His divinity did not consume His humanity, nor did His humanity limit His divinity."
📖 Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Conclusion
By embracing Christ in His one united divine-human nature, we embrace the fullness of our faith, salvation, and eternal life in Him.
May we always remain in this truth, as the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has taught for centuries. 🙏🏾
