Growing Spiritually in a Busy World: Lessons from Gregory of Nyssa & Ethiopian Orthodoxy

Introduction

Life today is full of distractions. We spend hours on social media, watching TV, or playing video games. Many people feel too busy to pray or think about God. But no matter how busy we are, spiritual growth is important.

Over 1,600 years ago, a Christian teacher named Gregory of Nyssa taught that becoming closer to God is a lifelong journey. His ideas are very similar to the teachings of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). Both teach that through prayer, fasting, and worship, we can grow spiritually and become more like God.

This article will explain Gregory’s teachings and show how Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity helps us apply them to our daily lives.

What Did Gregory of Nyssa Teach About Spiritual Growth?

Gregory of Nyssa believed that our relationship with God never stops growing. He taught four important lessons about spiritual life.

1.Keep Growing in Your Faith (Epektasis)

Gregory said that we should always try to get closer to God, just like a climber keeps going up a mountain. No matter how much we pray or learn, there is always more to discover.

🔹 Ethiopian Orthodox Connection:

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church also teaches that faith is a lifelong journey. Every day, believers pray using the Se’atat (Book of Hours), which reminds them to keep seeking God.

🔹 Wisdom from the Kebra Nagast (Ethiopian Orthodox Book):

"Wisdom is better than strength, and a pure heart is better than riches."

This means that knowing God and living a holy life are better than having power or money.

2.Change Your Desires to Focus on God

Everyone wants things—food, entertainment, and comfort. Gregory said that instead of ignoring our desires, we should use them for good.

🔹 Ethiopian Orthodox Connection:

In the Ethiopian Church, people fast to train themselves to hunger for God instead of material things.

🔹 Prayer from the Wudasse Mariam (Praise of Mary):

"O Blessed Virgin, you who fasted and prayed in the Temple, teach us to hunger not for food, but for the Word of God."

This prayer reminds us that we should desire a closer relationship with God more than anything else.

3.Fasting and Prayer Bring True Freedom

Some people think freedom means doing whatever they want. But Gregory taught that real freedom comes from controlling yourself. When we fast, pray, and say no to sin, we become stronger in spirit.

🔹 Ethiopian Orthodox Connection:

Ethiopian Orthodox Christians fast more than 200 days a year, including the Great Lent and Tsome Filseta (the Fast of the Assumption).

🔹 Prayer of St. Tekle Haymanot (Ethiopian Orthodox Saint):

"O Lord, strengthen my knees to stand in prayer as long as my soul longs for You. Let me hunger not for bread, but for Your Holy Mysteries."

This prayer teaches us that fasting and prayer help us focus on God instead of worldly things.

4.Worship with Your Whole Body and Soul

Gregory believed that our bodies are part of our spiritual life. We should use them to worship and grow closer to God.

🔹 Ethiopian Orthodox Connection:

Ethiopian Orthodox Christians use their bodies in worship by:

Bowing down (matania) during prayer

Standing for long church services

Fasting from food and drink

Taking part in the Holy Qurban (Eucharist)

🔹 Wisdom from the Fetha Nagast (Ethiopian Orthodox Law Book):

"The flesh must be disciplined so that the soul may rise, for man is both dust and breath, body and spirit."

This means that when we train our bodies, our souls become stronger.

Growing Closer to God in a Modern World

Gregory of Nyssa’s teachings, along with Ethiopian Orthodox wisdom, show us that spiritual growth is possible—even in a world full of distractions.

By:

Keeping our faith strong every day

Using our desires to focus on God

Practicing self-control through fasting and prayer

Worshiping with our whole body and soul

…we can live a life that leads us closer to God.

🔹 Final Ethiopian Orthodox Prayer (From the Se’atat - Book of Hours):

"O Lord, as You delivered Daniel from the lions through fasting, and as You saved the Three Youths from the fire through their prayers, deliver us from the fire of temptation and the mouths of sin."

In the end, spiritual growth is not about escaping the world but living in it with purpose, prayer, and holiness. If we follow these teachings, we can walk the path to God—one step at a time.
